“Writing without reading is to write in the dark: it might work, but it’s an unnecessary handicap.”

Open University Start Writing Fiction Course

I’m in the final week of my free online fiction writing course. I’ve found it a great way to build up writing regularly, being part of a community and gaining confidence and technique. Part of the course emphasises the importance of being well read, and continuously reading, especially out of your usual genre.

I think I read a huge variety of culture, authors and genres so hopefully this will feed into my writing! It was in fact getting more into reading that lit my old flame; writing. I currently try and read a book a week, with some taking less time and some taking more.

Seeing WWW Wednesday on a few blogs I thought I would join in. Let me know if you’ve read any of these, or what you’re reading at the moment!

WWW Wednesday is hosted by Sam from Taking on a World of Words! All you have to do is answers the following three questions:

What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?

Currently reading: The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu (the English translated version)

This is the second in a Sci-Fi trilogy with such detail and scientific creativity. I will definitely read all three as they’re currently available on Prime/Kindle Books. And I definitely see myself reading more by Cixin Liu in the future.

Recently finished: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

This was a chance read, I was scrolling on my Kindle and saw it was free as an Amazon classic, I remember really liking the film and it was supposedly a short read. I was immediately swept into it. I found the language delightful, the plot embracing and the character development intelligent. It was also great to read from a writers perspective. But it’s a classic for a reason, I don’t need to convince anyone to read this.

What will I read next: I am a dedicated subscriber to Books That Matter, a book subscription box “Bringing female-led fiction and empowerment to thousands of women across the world”. I like to hide from spoilers so I won’t know what the March book is until it arrives on my doorstep, but it should arrive just in time to be my next read!

    • That’s great to hear! I’m sometimes weary to read classics as the language can be wordy/difficult to read, but I’m really glad I took the plunge and I’ll be more encouraged next time!
Thanks for checking out my post. ☺️
